Week 2 Build Season

"Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there"
         - Bo Jackson

Slingshot Movie Premiere

SlingShot focuses on FIRST founder, noted inventor Dean Kamen, his fascinating life, and his 15-year quest to solve the world's water crisis. A technological genius with a provocative worldview, Kamen is an inspiration for future scientists. His inventions help people in need and ease suffering. SlingShot is about an indomitable man who just might have enough passion and innovative thinking to create a solution for a crisis affecting billions.

SlingShot is both an inspirational character study and a look at Kamen’s vapor compression distiller from its earliest development through recent trials in rural Ghana and beyond

Business and Marketing

Business and Marketing has been working hard with interviews and photos this week. The team recently began updating social media and has worked with the website, as well as its calendar over the past few weeks. Restaurant nights and team events have also been scheduled. This newsletter was also a project of the Business and Marketing team over the past few days.

Programming

Programming has been making pistons that will be used on the robot move in and out, and are also getting the rookies to debug code created by their mentors. This will help the new rookies learn more about the Java programming language.

Design

The design team has the most important job at the moment. They are also CADDING the robot arm, and the chassis in AutoCAD.

Build

The build team is keeping busy with making different stocks, and they are also working on field elements and the chassis materials.

Electrical

The electrical team is collaborating with Programming by wiring up and testing with the test board. They are also working together to make sure the motors and pneumatics are wired up correctly.

Alumni Spotlight

How has robotics helped you?

It helped me take tinkering with things, and turned it into a love of engineering. It led me to go into Mechanical Engineering in college. It also helped me get involved in many different parts of engineering like Gear Ratios, which I did not learn until my junior year at MSOE.

What do you plan to do after graduation?

Go out into industry and get a job. I am currently applying for jobs as a Mechanical Design Engineer.

Mentor of Design

I try and take a hands off approach. I let the students do their brainstorming and development. If they get off track, I help them get back on track. I also play a role as the Devil's Advocate. For example, asking them "What if this happened?", and "How would you recover?". I let them do their things, and check in a few times to make sure everything is running smoothly.
